A loop hike in Little Big Econ State Forest. Kolokee Loop shows off the best of the Florida Trail along the Econlockhatchee River in about 4.8-5.0 miles. It is listed as 5.2 mi. on the trail map.
Park at the 951 Barr St., Oviedo, FL 32765 Trailhead off CR426. Check your location carefully as I went to the wrong trailhead off Snow Hill Rd. at first. (Lat-Long: 28.687403, -81.159278).
Pay $2 for parking. As of late 2019, all the 2017 hurricane-damaged bridges had been replaced. There are side trails for hiking or mountain biking. When you get to the large Flagler Line bridge, you can cross it for fun, but the loop is back on your original side of the Econ River.
Kayak launch points are available nearby from other Oviedo-Geneva area points.
The map marks your way–follow the Orange Trail to the White trail. There are multiple “LE” markers on the map that correspond to rescue signs on the ground. You can also use many side spurs or take the route clockwise instead of the marked counter-clockwise. In the late afternoon I would recommend clockwise for better river views.
I saw one alligator sunning across from across the river. I didn’t see any other notable wildlife, but I’m sure you’ll find more than I did.
